Isa Ashiru, the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kaduna State, has characterized Governor Uba Sani’s All Progressives Congress (APC) government as a failure.
It was reported on Thursday that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Kaduna State University chapter went on indefinite strike due to Governor Sani’s failure to honor the deal signed with the union.
The notice of strike letter, signed by the union’s chairman, Peter Adamu, and secretary, Peter Waziri, mentioned withheld salary, pension, and nonpayment of promotion arrears as some of the agreements that Governor Sani’s administration failed to uphold.
It began: “The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU branch wishes to notify the public that her National Executive Council (NEC) has approved the request of the congress of the branch to resume the suspended indefinite strike action with effect from today, the 24 of April, 2025.” For the record, the issues under contention are as follows: 1. Payment of all withheld salary (May–September 2022 and others); 2. Payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA): 2026 to date. 3. Payment of promotion arrears and SIWES supervision allowances; 4. Group life insurance and other rights for deceased members; 5. Non-remittance of pensions (2009–2019); 6. Implementation of 25% and 35% wage awards; 7. Restoration of university autonomy.

“The indefinite strike action is due to breach of trust and failure of the Government of Kaduna State to keep to promises and honour the agreement reached by both parties.”
In a statement on Friday, Ashiru stated that ASUU’s strike was a sentence on Sani’s government. He informed ASUU that he would support their industrial action.
“ASUU-KASU’s indefinite strike is more than just a labor action; it is a stinging verdict on the APC-led Kaduna government. Salaries are withheld, pensions are unpaid, and promises are broken. This dictatorship has handled education with contempt. Enough is enough.
“For years, our instructors have been ignored, our students abandoned, and our institutions reduced to shadows. APC’s failure is not an accident; it is systemic, purposeful, and shameful. This isn’t governance. It is betrayal.
“We are in complete solidarity with ASUU-KASU. The fight for quality education is about Kaduna’s future. “It’s time for citizens to rise up and say that our children will never again be sacrificed on the altar of incompetence,” he stated.
