The opposition coalition led by prominent political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai is gaining momentum as preparations intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. As part of efforts to strengthen its presence nationwide, the coalition has reportedly appointed key figures to lead operations across the country’s six geopolitical zones.
According to insiders, the coalition is expected to announce its chosen party platform next week. Discussions are ongoing about whether to adopt an existing political party or form a new one. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are reportedly being considered as possible platforms. However, some coalition members argue that creating a new party would help avoid internal disputes over control of party structures — a common challenge when merging with established parties.
The coalition has also raised concerns about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that the body has refused to process applications from new political associations seeking registration ahead of the 2027 elections.
In terms of structure, the following appointments have been made to oversee zonal coordination:
-
North East: Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar
-
North Central: Former Senate President David Mark
-
North West: Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai
-
South East: Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi
-
South South: Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi
-
South West: Former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola
These appointments are provisional and subject to final ratification by the coalition’s leadership.
As the 2027 election draws closer, political watchers will be paying keen attention to how this coalition shapes the race and whether it can mount a strong challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
