An investigation has been opened by the Benue State Police Command into the circumstances surrounding the shooting murder of Emmanuella Ahenjir, a young woman, in Makurdi.

The incident took place early on Friday, May 16, 2025, according to a statement from CSP Anene Sewuese Catherine, Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Police Command.

She said a patrol team at Duku Park in Wurukum sent out a radio message at around 4:00 a.m., stating that they had had a suspicious interaction.

At approximately 4:00 a.m. on May 16, 2025, she stated, “A police team stationed at Duku Park, Wurukum, received a radio message stating that they had stopped a car approaching from the Benue Links area. However, the driver turned around, drove through the opposite lane, and began shooting intermittently at them.” A shot was fired by the police, but the driver fled.

When word broke that Emmanuella Ahenjir, a woman who was a student at Federal University in Wukari, Taraba State, had been shot and killed at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, the police were still pursuing the car at around ten in the morning.

After being told about the dead upon arriving at the hospital, the body was placed in the morgue for autopsy.

One of the car’s occupants, Apase Keghter, was spotted in the hospital and asked to be questioned.

“They were returning from club activities at Newcastle Event Centre when they drove in the opposite lane and passed the checkpoint without stopping, but they did not shoot,” Mr. Apase said.

Even though the cops shot them, they and the victim drove to the Welfare Quarters. They contacted a commercial truck to transport them to the hospital after they pulled over when they saw a flat tire.

The exhibit car, his possessions, and the other people that were inside the car are currently missing.

An extensive examination into the matter has been mandated by CP Emenari Ifeanyi. He promises to uncover the truth and make sure the rule of law is upheld, as reassured by the deceased’s friends and relatives.
