American reality TV star and social media influencer Blac Chyna has come under fire for after she announced plans to sell a skin-lightening cream to Nigerians.

Blac Chyna has partnered with beauty line, Whitenicious, to launch the face cream in Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. The cream will retail for a whopping US$250 per bottle which translates to a 91, 000 Nigeria Naira.

This is a princely sum considering that the average yearly salary in Nigeria is 658,324 Naira.  Apparently, the bottle comes in a “handcrafted jar with real Swarovski crystals”.

The decision to sell the cream in Nigeria has attracted a lot of criticism from people who accuse the influencer of promoting “self-hate” and of trying to exploit a country which already has a major problem with bleaching.

Long-term use of bleaching creams designed to make skin lighter has been linked to cancer, as well as kidney damage, blindness, and depression.

According to the World Health Organisation, nearly 77% of Nigerian women, the highest percentage in the world, use skin-lightening products regularly. Skin bleaching is also endemic in other parts of the world, such as India, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Here are some of the reactions to Blac Chyna’s plans:
