The Department of State Services has made public the news that it is currently holding Godwin Emefiele, who was recently removed from his position as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
On Saturday, June 10, 2023, a statement was released via the agency’s Twitter handle to make this information public.
According to the statement, “The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.”
“The public at large, and the media in particular, are urged to exercise the utmost caution in the reportage and narratives that they present regarding this,”
On Friday night, President Bola Tinubu is said to have taken immediate action to remove Emefiele from his position as minister.
After he was removed from his position, Emefiele was given the order to immediately turn over the running of his office to Adebisi Shonubi, the Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate. Shonubi will take over as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) until the results of the investigation and the reforms have been determined.
Reports that the suspended governor of the CBN had been detained by agents of the Department of State Services emerged late on Friday, but these reports have not been confirmed.
Peter Afunaya, the spokesman for the DSS, has now confirmed that the suspended governor of the CBN is currently in its custody.
