Citing intractable disagreements with the leadership of the ruling party, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai entered the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter of resignation delivered to his Kaduna State ward on Monday, El-Rufai voiced his dissatisfaction with the APC’s recent course.
“I have served the APC with diligence and contributed to its sustainability as a political platform,” he said. “Yet, events over the past two years have validated a concerning disrespect for democratic principles and progressive values that I cherish.”
El-Rufai, one of the APC’s founding members, was instrumental in the party’s electoral successes in 2015, 2019, and 2023. As he reflected on his time as governor of Kaduna, he emphasized the emphasis his administration placed on infrastructure, employment creation, healthcare, education, human development, and investment.
Despite his achievements, he made it clear that he was leaving the APC because of his mounting worries about internal party dynamics and governance.
He declared, “At this stage of my political career, I have to look for another political platform to pursue the progressive values I hold dear.”
When El-Rufai announced his transfer to the SDP, he thanked his supporters, mentors, and colleagues and reaffirmed his dedication to promoting democratic values.

“As an SDP member, I am dedicated to cultivating a cohesive democratic platform to contest the APC in the forthcoming elections,” he said.
The West reports that El-Rufai emphasized the need to make Nigeria a symbol of pride for Africa and the Black Race and called on Nigerians who share his worries about the country’s future to work with him to create the SDP as a workable option.
El-Rufai urged unity and advancement as he wrapped up his remarks, promising to focus his energies on bolstering Nigeria’s democratic system.
