According to the BBC, army officers in Gabon announced their takeover of the country’s government on national television on Wednesday.

President Ali Bongo was declared the victor of the election held on Saturday, but they claimed to be annulling the results.

As members of the CTRI (The Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions), the soldiers presented themselves and declared, “We have decided to safeguard peace by overthrowing the ruling regime.”

According to the electoral commission, Albert Ondo Ossa, Bongo’s major rival, placed second with 30.77% of the vote. Ondo Ossa’s charges of electoral irregularities have been refuted by Bongo’s team.

The 53-year rule of his family over Gabon would end with his removal from office.

Later on, more information…
