On Wednesday, police officers dispersed Makoko residents who were demonstrating against demolitions at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, while security personnel used tear gas on them.
According to reports, the demonstrators had assembled at the assembly building to call for a halt to home demolition and forced evictions in communities throughout the state.
However, the police’s use of tear gas caused panic in the neighborhood, causing demonstrators, locals, vendors, and commuters to escape in various directions in order to avoid being impacted.
Movement around the facility was hampered by the situation as demonstrators fled for their lives amid the mayhem.
The demonstration had temporarily dispersed, but security personnel remained on the area.
