Some Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) officers have resigned, citing persistent internal problems and a recent Supreme Court order that voided the October 5, 2024 local government elections.
The Supreme Court recently nullified the elections, stating that they did not follow electoral norms.
In response, RSIEC set a new local government election on August 9, 2025.
The commission’s chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), made the announcement at a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. Governor Siminalayi Fubara directed the commission to prepare for new elections, prompting the speaker’s comments.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly is investigating RSIEC’s handling of the October 2024 elections.
