The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has charged personnel of the Nigerian Army to embrace professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Buratai gave the task while addressing participants at the opening ceremony of the Army Headquarters Transformational Leadership Workshop for mid level officers and soldiers holding at Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.

He said the theme of the conference “Lead, follow or Get Out of the Way” is unique because the conference is designed to preach and teach the new generation of soldiers the essence of professionalism and commitment in service.

“One general effect of globalization is the decline of professionalism however this workshop is designed to mentor the new generation of soldiers in line with my vision for the Nigerian Army which is to build and encourage a highly responsive army in the discharge of its constitutional roles.

“Leadership is core to military professionalism. Leadership skills equip personnel with abilities to control their interference. This conference is designed to control the intellectual and physical abilities of the fighting components”.

The Army Chief noted that promotion of personnel under his watch is achieved on merit via professional attainment.

He further anticipated that the high calibre of resource persons with proven records of capacities and commitments tasked to anchor the conference is an attestation of its importance.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Army Transformation and Innovation, Major General Felix Agugu said the conference is part of the COAS effort in encouraging professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel.

Agugu maintained that the conference is designed to improve the willingness of service personnel to perform assigned task.

“This workshop will expose participants to a number of things in Nigeria that they can take pride in, thus clarifying the imperatives of patriotic citizenship and national loyalty even in the face of globalization and emerging technologies.

“It will interrogate the understanding of service, sacrifice and honour among the participants and provide them with worthy examples to emulate”.

The event is having in attendance Principal Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters as well as resource persons from the media sector including retired Servicemen.
