The National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) has advised state governments to create an enabling environment for cashew farmers to improve their production.

The association’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Sotonye Anga, gave the advice in Lagos on Thursday during an interview with Journalists.

He expressed regret that multiple taxation and non-subsidised inputs among others were militating against cashew production and exportation.

Anga stated that the feedback from members of the association indicated that cashew farmers were not having it rosy as farmers’ livelihoods were being threatened by the development.

‘‘The association has been getting feedback from members across the country and they are not palatable, especially for a state like Kogi that is one of the cashew producing states in the country.

‘‘We all know how important jute bag is to cashew farmers for storage and exportation.

‘‘Without that bag, a cashew farmer will have troubles exporting cashew that will retain quality throughout the duration of the export process.

‘‘At the open market, a jute bag costs N470 but from the report, the government is selling jute bags at N1, 000; that is over double the price.

‘‘This is an input in the cashew sub-sector that should be subsidised by any government. No farmers will survive under such situations,’’ he explained.

Anga said that the association expected cashew producing state governments to subsidise jute bags and make them available to farmers.
