It claimed that without any corresponding growth or economic recovery to support it, President Tinubu’s recent borrowing spree will push Nigeria’s national debt over N200 trillion by the year’s end.

After the National Assembly approved another $21 billion in foreign loans, the party expressed outrage over what it calls “fiscal vandalism” by the Tinubu administration.

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s national publicity secretary, issued a statement accusing President Tinubu of going above and beyond what his predecessor had done by mortgaging the nation’s future in mountains of debt under the guise of economic reform.

The National Assembly was also criticized by the party for serving as a rubber stamp, claiming that parliamentarians had neglected their responsibility to shield Nigerians from the effects of unmanageable debt.

Following the approval of a new $21 billion in foreign loans, the ADC stated that it is extremely concerned about the Tinubu administration’s risky obsession with borrowing and that what Nigerians are seeing is nothing less than a calculated decision to mortgage the nation’s future in order to cover up today’s failures.

Nigeria borrowed an average of N4.7 trillion annually under President Buhari, and even that raised a lot of concerns. However, indebtedness has increased to N49.8 trillion annually under President Tinubu.

This administration has borrowed more than ten times as much in just two years as Buhari did during the same period. Before the year is out, Nigeria’s total public debt would surpass N200 trillion at present rate. ADC stated, “Those in charge seem to have no brakes, believing they can borrow their way out of economic problems that require more thoughtful actions and greater fiscal discipline. As a result, we are speeding toward a financial cliff.”

The party pointed out that supporters of this administration prefer to claim that Tinubu borrows less money each year—just $1.7 billion—than Buhari, who borrows $4.15 billion.

However, as soon as we examine the exchange rate, that reasoning breaks out. These same debts are costing the nation much more now that the naira is in free decline, once more as a result of this administration’s bad policy decisions. Tinubu borrows N25.5 trillion annually in foreign exchange, which is more than Buhari’s annual average of N2.2 trillion. The party noted, “What we are seeing is the expansion of a debt trap brought about by economic mismanagement and a collapsed currency.”

“Our total public debt has grown from N12.6 trillion to over N149 trillion in 2025 since the APC took over in 2015,” the party continued. In the last ten years of the APC, more than $35 billion has been borrowed from external lenders alone. In just ten years, our debt to the World Bank has tripled, which is over twelve times greater. We now owe eleven times as much in Eurobonds. This government now intends to increase borrowing, raising the cap on our foreign debt to $67 billion.

“This careless borrowing, which is done year after year without any intention of paying it back or making any attempt to put it to good use, will leave our children paying off debts they did not accrue or gain from.

Read Also: Presidency: No Northern Leader Today Matches Buhari’s Mass Appeal

“The debt has kept growing, but infrastructure has remained inadequate, hospitals are still ill-equipped, universities are still woefully underfunded, and the electrical supply is still subpar. What precisely are the purposes of these loans, then? Nigerians anticipate that the National Assembly will pose this query. Rather, it has persisted in authorizing these loans without raising difficult issues, requiring a strategy, or advocating for the Nigerian people.

The Association of Small Business Owners in Nigeria claims that Tinubu’s borrowing costs are already destroying the foundation of our economy. There is no longer any credit available to small firms. Investors are withdrawing as their confidence wanes. Additionally, because debt service now accounts for more than 60% of our national GDP, the government is taxing regular Nigerian families excessively.

“The recent devaluation of the naira should have reduced the need for external borrowing, but the government has treated it as an excuse to borrow even more,” the ADC said, adding that the APC is taking out additional loans while other nations are struggling to reduce their debts.

Insisting that Nigerians have a right to know the conditions, interest rates, repayment schedules, and ultimate recipients of the loans, the party has called for a complete disclosure of all loan agreements signed by the APC and the Tinubu administration during the previous 10 years.

The period of borrowing to cover policy failures must end, according to ADC, which urged President Tinubu to stop this fiscal irresponsibility and instead concentrate on substantive transformation by making prudent investments and spending sensibly.

Among other things, these bills moved electricity from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Current Legislative List, allowing state governments to invest in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution in areas that were connected to the national grid.

This should allow state governments to give energy to their citizens in the same manner that they provide water, even though it would make obsolete the Federal Government-owned Nigeria Rural Electrification Agency (REA), which has been supplying electricity to some rural (and urban) areas.

Seye Opeleye, Director General of Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission stated that “No legislation, since 1999, has excited Nigerian development stakeholders as this.”

State governors must now be more bold in establishing and managing their own electricity companies or persuade private organizations to do so within their states as a result of the devolution of power sector management in the nation.

Beyond what President Buhari did, President Bola Tinubu has escalated the situation. In addition to allowing state governments to control power generation, transmission, and distribution inside their borders, he has signed the power Amendment Bill, 2023.

Tinubu’s modest move is a huge step that should help decentralize the electrical industry even more, give states greater authority over their energy infrastructure, attract private investment, and increase the nation’s electricity supply’s regularity.

Electricity markets are already dominated by seven states: Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Ondo, and Oyo. Before September 2025, it is anticipated that Lagos, Niger, Ogun, and Plateau States will have finished their own transitions.

Naturally, the development is already being criticized by wet blanket skeptics. Oddly, some so-called industry experts also seem to have a very pessimistic perspective of the entire situation, while officials from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) are voicing concerns about some states’ capacity to control their markets.

However, the most optimistic observers stress the significance of NERC and state regulatory collaboration, staff and agency capacity improvement, and the latter’s financial preparedness to make sufficient investments.

We remember with fondness the boldness of former Governor Tinubu to build a power plant in Lagos State, even though we dare hope that the Niger Dam power facility can be turned over to the Niger State government under established payment protocols.

In an agreement worth $800 million, he persuaded Enron to operate a 90 megawatt independent power plant in the first phase and a 5409 megawatt thermal plant in the long run. Olusegun Obasanjo, however, ruined this magnificent attempt since his military background interfered with his ability to fulfill his duties as Nigeria’s democratically elected president.

President Obasanjo’s centralized strategy thwarted Governor Tinubu’s attempts to regularly supply energy to Lagos State’s residents and businesses.

However, state governors are now in a difficult position as a result of the president’s recent actions. They might have no justifications for not building or expanding power infrastructure in their states given the additional funding they currently get from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee following the elimination of the gasoline subsidy.

The creation of jobs is the most direct benefit of increasing state capacity to generate electricity. Of fact, as a result of greater economic activity, the states will eventually start to receive more Internally Generated Revenue.

The structure that divides generation, transmission, and distribution into silos is the reason why the electrical sector, which was partially privatized during the government of President Goodluck Jonathan, is not doing properly. The investors who purchased the legacy electricity companies also exhibited obvious managerial, financial, and technical incompetence.

It should be feasible for each market to have a single company that produces, transmits, and distributes its own electricity in order to facilitate the operationalization of the new law.

To provide consistent electricity within their geopolitical zones, states should combine their resources. For example, by pooling resources to create a massive electricity company, the Southwestern states could benefit from economies of scale.

We urge the media and civil society organizations to closely monitor the new electricity policies’ implementation and hold state governments accountable for supplying electricity.

Speaking to the Board of Trustees of Lux Mundi University in Umuahia, Otti highlighted that his government chose to address the issues it inherited in the health and education sectors from the ground up as soon as it took office.

Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Board of Trustees’ alternative chair, led the group.

The governor was notified by the board of a collaboration with the United States of America (USA) Home Health Aid Training Institute.

The board used the occasion to invite the governor to the school’s second matriculation program, which will take place on July 18, 2025, and announced that 50 of its students will travel to the United States for an exchange program with the institute next month.
Otti, who was thrilled to hear the positive news, stated that the state greatly depends on health and education.

“The two main items you placed on the table—health and education—have been on our agenda since we arrived in the state in 2023. We have devoted 20% of our budget to education and 15% to health over the past 24 months,” he continued.
Governor Otti clarified that he made the decision to address the underlying causes of the issues his government inherited in the fields of health and education.

“We discovered that the number of children who were not in school was actually rising,” he said. We examined the scenario in its entirety. On Mondays and Tuesdays, school-age youngsters are seen hawking items such as groundnuts and akara.

When we investigated, we discovered that many of them were unable to pay for their education because of the school costs.
The Governor said, to cheers, “Therefore, from the beginning of this year, we removed school fees and education became free and compulsory at the basic level.”
He said that his government’s free education program increased school enrollment, creating a significant labor shortage in addition to the necessity to renovate the deteriorating schools because the learning environment is crucial.
“First and foremost, we made teaching more appealing by increasing their pay and making the entire compensation package more alluring than even the Civil Service,” he said.

The governor also clarified that hiring 5,364 new teachers was insufficient to stop the ongoing increase in public school enrollment. Abia is currently hiring an extra 4,000 teachers to guarantee that every school has a sufficient number of motivated, well-trained, and qualified staff members.
“You shouldn’t be denied the chance to attend school because your parents are not wealthy,” he said.
Regarding health, Otti disclosed that none of the 948 primary healthcare centers (PHCs) were operational, indicating that his administration inherited a broken primary healthcare system that was in disrepair and short on staff.

“We started by creating a minimal standard template for primary healthcare centers,” he stated.
“At the last count, 138 have been completely retrofitted with the remaining 62, making it 200 to be completed soon,” the governor stated of the ongoing rehabilitation, upgrading, and retrofitting of 200 PHCs.

“Those that we have correctly installed have been put into service. Bende was where the last one was. Solar power, a renewable energy source, is installed in the basic health centers.

Using the platform, Audi expressed gratitude to the governor for accepting them and said that his work in Abia State is unmatched.

As a proud son of the Owukpa community in Ogbadibo Local Government Area, I am overjoyed by the inclusion of numerous developmental projects for Owukpa in the 2025 federal budget. These projects, set to commence soon, are a clear demonstration of Hon. Agbese’s commitment to the grassroots. While his two years in office have yielded visible and commendable progress, I objectively rate his performance at 60%—a score that shows both appreciation for his achievements and room for even greater impact.

Having previously contested for the same seat in the 2023 election, I have observed Hon. Agbese’s leadership up close. I must admit that he has surpassed expectations, and I doubt I could have done better in his position. His youthfulness and dynamic approach to governance are a breath of fresh air—an indication that it’s time to entrust leadership to the younger generation.

Respecting the Spirit of Zoning

From 1999 to 2023, our federal constituency has operated an informal zoning arrangement in which each local government takes a turn at the National Assembly for two terms. Ado had its turns in 1999–2003 and 2019–2023; Okpokwu from 2003–2011; and Ogbadibo from 2011–2019. My decision to contest in 2023 was premised on this rotational understanding, arguing that Ado had completed its share—albeit split into two.

It’s worth noting that no local government has ever voluntarily relinquished power after completing its two terms. In fact, attempts by Okpokwu and Ogbadibo to secure a third term in 2011 and 2019, respectively, were defeated through electoral processes. Ado Local Government, despite dividing its tenure, has technically fulfilled its two-term quota.

In 2022, after several high-level stakeholder meetings, leaders across the constituency convened in Okpoga and reached a gentleman’s agreement known as The Okpoga Accord 2022. It was resolved that all three local governments would be free to contest, with the understanding that zoning would recommence from the winner’s local government. That election saw all three LGAs participate under different platforms—PDP (Ogbadibo), Labour (Okpokwu), and APC (Ado). Ado emerged victorious.

Why Agbese Deserves a Second Term

In line with the Okpoga Accord and the principles of fairness, Ado should be allowed to complete a second term. Unless a new consensus emerges that every LGA should now serve only one term—a proposal I find unfeasible—Hon. Agbese’s mandate should be respected and renewed.

Though some individuals have approached me to run against him in 2027, I remain steadfast in my belief that leadership is divinely ordained. As I always say, “A man can receive nothing except it is given to him from above.” My focus now is on supporting Hon. Agbese to finish strong, while I continue to prepare myself for greater responsibilities in the future.

His blueprint is clear. The 2025 budget reflects his inclusive vision, with impactful projects planned across all 35 wards. I pray for his continued success and offer him my full, undivided support as he seeks re-election.

Let’s give the younger generation a fair chance to lead and transform our society for good. I am 100% behind Chief (Dr.) Philip Agbese—OKANGA 2027 is a movement whose time has come.

Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that he was offered N5 billion to coordinate the impeachment of his principal.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ehie claimed he has evidence of the bribe offer stored on his phone.

“I can also open my phone to show you, in the beginning of October 2023, when they approached me with a bribe of N5 billion. It is here in my phone,

“It was for impeachment. It’s here. I have it and I have printed it and distributed it, in case, in their evil imagination, they decide to attack me. I already have a son and a brother,” he said.

Ehie said the offer was made while he was serving as the majority leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Chief of Staff also denied claims that he orchestrated the October 30, 2023, bombing of the Rivers Assembly complex on Fubara’s orders.

The allegation was made by a former Head of Service in the state, George Nwaeke, during a press conference last Friday.

Nwaeke had alleged that he witnessed a bag of money being handed over to Ehie at the Government House to execute the operation, though he admitted he did not know the amount inside.

Dismissing the claims as false and politically motivated, Ehie said, “It is very important to clarify that I had no hand and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Like everyone else, I woke up in the early hours of 30th of October 2023 to hear of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”

Ehie stated that he had instructed his lawyers to file a lawsuit against Nwaeke for criminal libel.

“I will not join issues completely with Mr. George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against him, and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations,” he said.

He further alleged that Nwaeke had sought financial assistance from him on the same day he resigned as head of service.

Rivers State has been in turmoil since Fubara’s fallout with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state and suspended both the governor and his deputy.

Subsequently, on March 26, the sole administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, suspended all political officeholders in the state.

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has announced his intention to contest for re-election in the 2027 general elections.

Sani made the declaration on Sunday while delivering his Eid-el-Fitr message at his residence in Kaduna.

“Any politician contesting an election depends on the political equation that determines the position to vie for. If the conditions are right and the equations are favorable, I will offer myself to contest specifically for the Kaduna Central senatorial district,” he stated.

He further emphasised that his ambition remains secondary to ensuring the re-election of Governor Uba Sani for a second term.

“For now, our priority is to see that the incumbent governor, Uba Sani, is re-elected. We will work with all our might and strength to achieve this. We know there will be challenges and opposition, but we are well prepared for all forces,” he added.

Sani also used the occasion to urge Muslims to pray for Nigeria’s peace and unity during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. Additionally, he condemned the recent killing of hunters in Edo State, calling on security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.

“If citizens cannot move freely across the country, then we are not truly a nation. If individuals take the law into their hands for any reason, it means there is no government or authority,” he lamented.

He called on all Nigerians who desire a better country to work towards peace and unity for the preservation of democracy, despite the challenges being experienced.

Sani also urged the government to uphold fundamental human rights, particularly the right to life, as a crucial step towards national stability and development.

•14 arrested as gov suspends security corps boss, illegal vigilante groups

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, on Sunday, strongly condemned the killing of 16 hunters in Edo State, vowing that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The CDS pledged, as the Edo State government said, that Governor Monday Okpehbolo had reached out to the victims’ families, the Hausa community leaders in the state, and the northern governors about the incident.

About 14 suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the tragic incident.

<amp-video-iframe src="https://360playvid.info/slidepleer/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s" width="16" height="9" layout="responsive" dock="#pv-dock-slot" style=" overflow: visible !important;"> </amp-video-iframe>

A mob killed the hunters in Uromi, Edo State, last Thursday while travelling to Kano from Rivers State to celebrate Eid with their families.

The incident was said to have happened when the truck conveying them was stopped by a vigilante group, and the men who were found with dane guns were lynched by the interceptors who mistook them for kidnappers.

No fewer than 16 victims were set ablaze, while 10 were rescued by the police. Those who died in the incident were buried on Saturday.

The incident has been widely condemned by various northern groups, state governments, and lawmakers.

In a statement on Sunday by the Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, said the CDS stated that the tragic incident could have been prevented had the appropriate authorities been notified to verify the identities of the victims.

It read, “Gen Christopher Musa has condemned in strong terms the unfortunate killing of hunters while on transit in Edo State. The incident, which occurred on 28 March 2025, could have been avoided if the appropriate authorities were notified and involved in ascertaining the identity of the victims.

“Gen Musa condoled with the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the families of those who lost their lives.”

He also urged citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead rely on security agencies for conflict resolution.

Musa assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces of Nigeria will collaborate with the police and other security agencies to ensure justice is served.

The statement added, “The CDS also urged Nigerians not to take laws into their hands but always revert to constituted authority in matters that affect security. The Nigeria Police, military, and other security agencies are well trained to handle such matters.

“The Chief of Defence Staff assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces of Nigeria will work closely with the police and other relevant security agencies to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.”

He warned vigilante groups, hunters and others to register with relevant agencies to regulate the possession of firearms.

Musa also admonished local hunters and vigilante groups to register with the police, Department of State Services, AFN and any other agencies mandated by law to regulate the possession of firearms while calling on vigilante groups to always revert to police for appropriate action.

Security chief suspended

Meanwhile, Okpehbolo has suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (retd.), over the March 27 killing of the 16 travellers.

The Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, confirmed Ibadin’s suspension and all illegal vigilante groups operating under whatever guise in the state in a statement on Sunday.

The statement read, “It is hereby announced for the information of the general public that after a review of the preliminary report of the unfortunate incident of Thursday 27th March, 2025 at Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State involving the gruesome killing of some travellers, the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups operating under whatever guise in the state.

“Also suspended is the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (retd). It is to be reiterated that the local vigilante group involved in the gruesome killing of 27th March was operating illegally as it was never profiled or registered with Edo State Security Corps.

“Its actions do not reflect the core values, character and principles of the Okpebholo administration, or the objectives of the corps as enshrined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law.

“Investigations into the killings are ongoing and 14 persons have been arrested so far, while there is an intense manhunt for others involved in the gruesome killing by a special team set up by the Inspector-General of Police.”

The state government reiterated its belief in the constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens to move freely or engage in lawful business in any part of the country.

“In the meantime, the government is in touch with families of the victims, community leaders and the Government of Kano State, where most of the deceased are reported to hail from.

“We urge all parties involved to remain calm as the State Government remains committed to ensuring that justice is done in a most efficient, transparent and proactive manner,” the statement added.

Okpebholo peace efforts

The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, said the governor has reached out to the Hausa community to let them know that he is not in support of the act.

He explained that Okpehbolo has also charged the security operatives to ensure that such an occurrence does not take place again.

“I am sure the action the governor has taken will deter the aggrieved party from carrying out reprisal attacks because this is what usually happens.

“But such a reprisal is precipitated by delay in doing the right thing by bringing those involved to book. If they kill your person and you see those involved are being dealt with, it will reduce your desire to carry out reprisal attacks.

“But if they are allowed to walk freely, that will amount to calling the bluff of the aggrieved party. The police and other security agencies are also aware that occurrences like this breed reprisal attacks.

“On the side of the governor, he has instructed a thorough investigation because he sees the killing as barbaric and it is wrong for people to take laws into their own hands,” he stated.

On whether Okpebholo had reached out to the Northern governors, Ohonbamu said, “Senator Okpehbolo belongs to the Governor’s Forum, and I am sure that he has reached out to them to let them know the actions he has taken and the one he will take, which will not be made known to the public.

“It could have happened in another state, and I am sure the same step will also have been taken to douse tension.

“The first thing that will gladden the hearts of Northern governors is that the Edo State Government has shown that it is against the killing. He rushed down from Abuja by road to the scene of the incident, warned the people and promised that justice will be done.”

Sanusi wants justice

In a related development, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sañusi II, warned the youth in the state against reprisals, reminding them that revenge is strictly forbidden in Islam.

The monarch gave the warning during the Eid prayer sermon at the Kano Eid ground, Kofar Mata in Kano, on Sunday.

The Eid prayer was attended by the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, his entourage, and a large gathering of the Muslim faithful.

He called on the people of the state, especially the youths, to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to peaceful coexistence, stressing that any act of vengeance would undermine the pursuit of justice and destabilize the community.

The monarch, however, urged security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served for the Kano indigenes who were brutally killed in Edo State.

Sanusi emphasized the importance of justice in maintaining peace and stability in the country.

He said, “This matter must not be allowed to go unpunished. Justice must be done to prevent further escalation and ensure lasting peace.”

The Emir extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, urging them to seek redress through lawful and peaceful means.

He reminded the grieving families that justice can only be achieved through proper legal channels. The Eid prayer was conducted peacefully across the state.

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi, similarly condemned the brutal killing of the Hausa hunters, stressing that Nigerians should be free to live anywhere in the country without fear of intimidation and harassment.

The monarch spoke on Sunday after observing this year’s Eid-il-fitr prayer alongside many Muslims in Iwo.

Oba Akanbi, while praying for Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu, called on Muslims to continue to imbibe the spirit of Ramadan and not go back to the habits they dropped during Ramadan.

Oba Akanbi said, “I condemned the jungle justice on the Fulani hunters. They are Nigerians, and Nigerians should be protected at all times, anywhere. ‘’

CAN condemn act

The Christian Association of Nigeria and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria also flayed the mob action, describing it as lawless and a grave violation of human rights.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN expressed deep sorrow over the extrajudicial killings, emphasizing the urgent need for justice and stronger law enforcement measures.

“This extrajudicial killing is a grievous violation of human rights and a chilling reminder of the dangers of lawlessness. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of these hunters, who now mourn the loss of their loved ones taken in such a senseless and brutal manner. Our thoughts are also with all families affected by recent acts of violence and injustice across Nigeria.

“These tragedies inflict profound pain and could erode trust in our legal system, highlighting the urgent need for effective law enforcement and the upholding of the rule of law. The government must act decisively to address these failures and ensure justice is served,” the statement partly read.

Okoh also called on Nigerians to unite for peace and security in the face of the current challenges while calling on the government to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“In the face of such challenges, we must not succumb to despair. Instead, let this moment spur us to unite for peace and security. I urge all Nigerians to practise charity, support those in need, and stand together against violence and division.

“Specifically, we call on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of the sixteen hunters and ensure the perpetrators face justice. Leaders at all levels must also promote understanding and reject mob actions. CAN reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and cooperation with Muslim leaders, fostering interfaith initiatives to build a stronger nation,” he added.

The President highlighted the shared values between Christianity and Islam and further called on religious and community leaders to discourage mob violence and promote understanding among different faiths, while reaffirming the body’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing the need for a society where every life is valued and protected under the rule of law.

“As we extend our goodwill on this special occasion, let us all embrace compassion, forgiveness, and mutual respect. These values are the foundation of a society where justice prevails, and every life is protected,” the statement read.

The National Secretary of PFN, Bishop David Bakare, described the act as “barbaric and ungodly,” emphasising that even if the victims were mistaken for kidnappers, it was unacceptable for the people to take the law into their own hands.

Bakare appealed for calm, urging against reprisal attacks and emphasizing that “two wrongs cannot make a right.”

He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged the authorities to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

Bakare said, “We strongly condemn this barbaric and ungodly act of killing travellers under any circumstances.

“Even if they were kidnappers, that does not warrant taking the law into our hands; the right thing was to hand them over to law enforcement agents for proper investigation and legal action.

“We urge that a thorough investigation must be carried out on this matter to ensure that the culprits are brought to book, no matter who they may be. We appeal against reprisals because two wrongs won’t make a right. Our prayers are with the families of the victims.”

Also, the spokesman for the House of Representatives, Akintunde Rotimi, called on security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing that Nigerians should coexist peacefully regardless of ethnic or religious differences.

Rotimi, who represents Ekiti North I Federal Constituency, spoke on Saturday in Ayede Ekiti during the Second Ramadan Annual Lecture he organised in honour of the National Vice President of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Aare Sulaiman Ogunlayi.

Rotimi said, “Nigerians should be able to coexist peacefully regardless of our cultural and traditional differences. There must be love and harmony among us.

“On behalf of the people of Ikole/Oye-Ekiti (Ekiti North I) Federal Constituency, we condemn the violent mob attack on those travellers in Edo State. We call on security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice,” the lawmaker said.

Edo Hausa community

The Head of Hausa Community in Edo State, Alhaji Badamosi Saleh, said that his people had been advised not to take laws into their own hands, pointing out that the government is taking steps to bring to book all those connected with the crime.

He said his members had been told to remain crime as the security agencies have arrested some of the perpetrators, adding that they are apprising their people in the North of the situation.

He said, “We have told our people not to take laws into their hands. We have seen the action of the government and we can see that they are not relenting, which has made us calm.

“We have also spoken to our people in the North and have told them that the situation is under control and that Governor Okpehbolo is working to ensure that those that committed the crime are brought to book. The governor’s action gives us joy.

“We were there with the security agencies when the governor came to Uromi on Friday. The police, the DSS and the fourth brigade commander were all there. We commend their effort.

“The police are already going after the people that committed the crime, and some have already been arrested. We are sure that anyone that has something to do with the killing will be prosecuted.”

In the same vein, the Secretary of the Arewa Community in the 17 southern states and the Senior Special Assistant to Gov Dapo Abiodun on Inter Ethnic Affairs, Hadi Sani, assured that the condemnable killing of 16 Hausa hunters would not lead to reprisal attacks in any part of the country.

He said that engagement has already been activated to ensure that nothing disrupts the peaceful coexistence between the Hausas and other ethnic groups in the southern part of the country.

Sani, who condemned this unfortunate incident, describing it as disheartening and barbaric, however, said that such lawless incident should not be used as a yardstick to generalise the southern Nigeria ties with the northerners

“However, we can assure the good people of Ogun State that there can’t be any reprisal attack as we are sensitizing our people on the effort taken so far by the government to bring the perpetrators to book.

“Such effort includes Edo State governor leading a delegation to the community to sympathize with them and direct on immediate arrest of the perpetrators, which is ongoing.

“Also, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the security agencies to clamp down on the perpetrators. There is also obvious evidence of a series of arrests of the alleged perpetrators.

“As an Arewa Community regional representative and peaceful coexistence expert, we cannot allow this issue to degenerate into regional conflict, rather, we will ensure the security agencies should do their job diligently to ensure the perpetrators face the law and justice is been served accordingly to prevent future occurrences.”

The Arewa Consultative Forum National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, in Kaduna on Sunday, condemned the Edo incident, describing it as part of a larger pattern of attacks and harassment of Northerners in Southern Nigeria.

“The tragic incident at Uromi, Edo State, cannot be isolated from the pattern of ethnic profiling and vigilante meted out to Northerners as they seek to eke out livelihoods in Southern Nigeria,” the group alleged.

The President of the Southern Youth Association of Nigeria, Pastor Okikiola Fayomi, joined others in calling on the security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

Fayomi, while sympathising with the families of the victims, urged the northerners to also ensure that this condemnable act did not trigger any form of reprisal attack that could hurt the much cherished peaceful coexistence in the country.

PDP slams Okpebholo

But the Edo State People’s Democratic Party Caretaker Committee said the suspension of Ibadin is a clear admission by the government that the security architecture of the state has failed.

The Publicity Secretary of the committee, Chris Nehikare, in a statement, said the incident indicated deep-rooted inefficiencies of the state’s security outfit.

“The suspension of the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (retd.) is a clear admission by the government that the security architecture of the state has failed,’’ the party pointed out.

To avoid a reoccurrence and prove the security in the state, the PDP called for a comprehensive audit and overhaul of the Edo State Security Corps.
