An electrician, Olaniyi Moshood, lost his life after falling off an electric pole that collapsed while he was working on it in the Atan area of Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
TheNigerian Metro gathered through a telephone conversation with a community source identified as Saheed on Monday that the incident occurred on Friday.
According to Saheed, Moshood was contracted by the community to carry out repair work on a high-tension pole.
The deceased was said to have fixed two sections of the cable, and while fixing the third cable, the pole collapsed, causing him to sustain severe head injuries.
Saheed added that the electrician was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
He said, “An industrial accident occurred in Atan. An electrician died while repairing a high-tension cable contracted to him by the community. A pole he was working on collapsed and led to him sustaining severe head injuries.
“He was rushed to a hospital within the area, where he was declared dead.”
Efforts to get the reaction of the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, proved abortive as she had yet to respond to messages and calls made to her line as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer in the area, privy to the incident but not authorised to speak with the press, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
The police source added that members of the deceased’s family requested the release of his corpse for burial.
“The incident happened. The man was contracted by the community to fix a high-tension cable when one of the poles collapsed while he was on it.
“He fell alongside the pole and died in the process. The family requested his body for burial. They said he had been doing the work for a long time and they believed that the incident was an accident,” the senior police officer said.
