The projected local government congresses that the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party had planned as part of the 2027 general election preparations have once again been halted by the High Court of Abia State.
It was reportedthat the court attitude came after Abure-led NWC, during a meeting last week in Abuja, confirmed its members’ positions and set congress dates across the country.
In the meantime, the Nenadi Usman-led leadership claimed in a statement released by Ife Salako, the Labour Party’s acting National Publicity Secretary, that on November 26, 2025, the High Court of Abia State, located in Isiala Ngwa, issued an interim ruling in Suit No. HIN/47/2025.
Hon. Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti got the injunction, which prohibits Abure and what the statement referred to as his illegitimate National Working Committee from proceeding with their alleged and illegal ward, local government, and state congresses.
“The general public, especially all Labour Party supporters nationwide, is hereby notified that on November 26, 2025, the High Court of Abia State sitting in Isiala Ngwa granted an interim order in Suit No: HIN/47/2025,” the announcement states.
“The order, sought by Hon. (Sir) Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti, restrains Barr. Julius Abure and his illegal National Working Committee from proceeding with their purported and unlawful ward, local government, and state congresses.
“The Labour Party, therefore, urges its teeming members nationwide to completely disregard the so-called congresses being promoted by Julius Abure and his associates.
A court of competent jurisdiction has already ruled that these unlawful exercises are void. As a law-abiding political party, we urge all of our members to honor and abide by the court’s ruling.
“The Labour Party congresses will commence soon, and members will be duly informed once the details are finalised.”
The Inspector-General of Police, the sixth defendant/respondent in the lawsuit, was also urged by the parties to comply with the court order.
It urged the IGP to ensure the arrest and prosecution of anyone organising or participating in any purported Labour Party congresses scheduled for 2nd, 4th, or 6th December, or on any other dates, except such activities are duly authorised by the legitimate leadership of the Party headed by Senator Usman.
A warning was also given to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which is designated as the seventh defendant/respondent in the case.
The party urged INEC to distance itself from this illegal activity, which is being carried out by people who want to damage the Commission’s hard-won image.
It further stated that once the Labour Party’s schedule for congresses and conventions is made public, it will formally notify INEC of its “authentic activities” in accordance with the Electoral Act and other pertinent laws.
