Court Jails Two Alleged EFCC Officials

Two persons who impersonated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano State have been found guilty.
According to reports, the Kano State High Court’s Justice Nasiru Saminu sentenced the two convicted individuals, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Usman, on Friday after they were arraigned on a single count of impersonation.
In May 2025, the pair used fake identity cards to pose as EFCC inspectors and trick unwary members of the public, according to the EFCC’s Kano Zonal Directorate.

“That you, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 at Kano within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, falsely impersonated as investigators of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where you used a false identity card and paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC, so you committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law,” the charge stated in part.

After the charge was read to them in court, both defendants entered guilty pleas.

Idris I. Haruna, the prosecuting attorney, gave the court the case’s facts and pleaded with the judge to rule in their favor.

They were later found guilty by Justice Saminu, who sentenced them to six months in prison each with the possibility of a ₦50,000 fine.

The individuals were caught while pretending to be anti-graft agents, according to the agency’s confirmation. The public was cautioned by the EFCC to be wary of scammers posing as commission representatives.

The conviction supports the EFCC’s continued efforts to crack down on impersonators who damage the agency’s reputation and take advantage of people by using false pretenses.
