Dangote Refinery Confirms Layoffs, Says Only Few Staff Affected

Following the dismissal of numerous Nigerian employees who joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN), Dangote Refinery has claimed that only a small number of employees were impacted.
Less than twenty-four hours after ninety percent of its Nigerian employees joined the PENGASSAN, Dangote Refinery reportedly fired all of them.

In a statement posted on its 𝕏 account on Friday, the corporation claimed that the employees were fired for committing numerous acts of sabotage that compromised operational effectiveness and posed safety issues.

Despite the recent restructure, the petroleum refinery also reported that more than 3,000 Nigerians are still actively employed by the company.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery wants to address recent claims about the ongoing reorganization within its facilities, according to the statement. This is not a random exercise. Protecting the refinery from recurring acts of sabotage that have compromised operating efficiency and raised safety concerns has become imperative.

Due to sporadic instances of sabotage in the refinery’s various units that had catastrophic effects on human life and raised safety concerns, the aforementioned decision was made in the refinery’s best interests.

“To guarantee the long-term stability of this vital national asset, we continue to be watchful of our internal systems and weaknesses. For the sake of Nigerians, our African partners, and the thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on the refinery, its protection is essential.

Currently, more than 3,000 Nigerians are employed actively at our petroleum refinery. Due to our ongoing hiring, only a very tiny percentage of employees were impacted.

“Nigerian talent through our experienced hiring process and various graduate trainee programs.”

“We acknowledge and respect globally recognized labor standards, such as each employee’s freedom to choose whether or not to join a union. We are steadfast in our dedication to workers’ rights.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery was established to benefit Nigerians, increase Africa’s energy self-sufficiency, and generate good, long-term jobs. To maintain the greatest levels of safety, accountability, and openness, we will keep collaborating with our stakeholders, employees, and regulators.
