The political landscape in Osun State is heating up, as popular Nigerian Afrobeat artist, David Adeleke—better known as Davido—appears to have confirmed swirling rumours about his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While speculations have trailed Adeleke’s political future, especially following his recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alongside Davido and his brother, Deji Adeleke, a new twist emerged in the form of Davido’s unreleased music.
In a teaser video shared online, the award-winning singer drops lines like “new broom go sweep better” and “from umbrella to broom,” sparking intense reactions across social and political spheres. The metaphors are hardly subtle, referring to the APC’s broom symbol and the PDP’s umbrella emblem—symbols deeply embedded in Nigeria’s political identity.
Although the governor has not publicly declared his intention to switch parties, nor has the APC formally acknowledged any ongoing discussions, Davido’s lyrical references have reignited the conversation.
However, not all APC stakeholders are on board. Senator Iyiola Omisore, a former deputy governor and ex-national secretary of the APC, expressed concerns over what he termed an unorthodox approach to party defection. Speaking on national television, Omisore stated, “All politics is local. I have never seen a governor trying to bulldoze his way into another party through social media.”
Insiders suggest that key APC figures remain unaware or unconvinced of Adeleke’s plans, raising questions about the legitimacy and strategy behind the rumoured move.
The situation remains fluid, but one thing is clear: the line between politics and pop culture has never been thinner. As Nigeria approaches a pivotal period of realignments and political repositioning, every lyric, visit, and gesture is under scrutiny.
