Dele Momodu, who is part of the opposition coalition, has called the 2027 presidential election an ethnic race.
He said that only former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Nasir El-Rufai, and Kano Emir Mohammed Sanusi could cast opposition ballots.
“As a Democrat, I am not afraid of healthy electoral competition,” he said, acknowledging that elections were a game of numbers.
Momodu stated via 𝕏 that any efforts to make Nigeria a one-party state have to be resisted.
The 2027 presidential race has clearly and blatantly turned into an ethnic contest, he said, and the only way to win votes for the opposition is to go in the other direction, where you have Atiku, Kwankwaso, Tambuwal, El-Rufai, and even Emir Sanusi (should he choose to leave his position as a monarch to enter politics).
Since popularity can only be confirmed by contest or agreement among the main opposition organizations, the Southern candidates should not be excluded as long as they are prepared for a primary.
“Every effort must be made to dissuade monarchical or one-party governments.”
If opposition parties choose to run against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, Momodu also asked them to band together and use what he called the “ethnic and religious cards.”
He said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has become even more powerful as a result of the most recent wave of PDP governors defecting, notably Peter Mbah of Enugu and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
He claims that because the APC currently controls both the legislative and executive branches, Nigeria is in risk of turning into a one-party state.
