According to the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, and other northern political elites plotted to shorten President Bola Tinubu’s term.
While announcing their support for Tinubu’s reelection in 2027, the group cautioned against self-appointed “leaders of the North” trying to overthrow the President too soon and violate the zoning concept.
Rufai and other northern political leaders were accused by the group’s general secretary, Bunmi Fasehun, in a statement released on Monday of attempting to shorten the unwritten power rotation agreement between the North and South.

“The rotating idea, which the entire nation adopted and which has made governance inclusive and egalitarian since 1999, should be noted by resentful individuals now demanding Asiwaju’s early removal. Fasehun stated that political adventurists such as Hameed Baba-Ahmed and Nasir El-Rufai should not jeopardize the principle for their own self-interest.
When such political actions jeopardize national unity, Fasehun emphasized that the OPC’s more than 10 million members and sympathizers would not keep quiet.
By opposing a current South African president, no one can erase the historic role that Asiwaju played in bringing the presidency back to the North in 2015. An opposition party was elected president for the first time in Nigerian history.
God utilized Tinubu’s resources, connections, and stratagem to enable the mission, which was impossible, from the 2015 and 2019 primaries to the general elections.
The OPC stated, “Clearly, Tinubu rallied his South-West to cast a sizable majority of votes for Buhari in both elections.”
Similar to the late South African icon Nelson Mandela, Fasehun similarly characterized Tinubu as a byproduct of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
Tinubu, like the OPC and our founder, the late Dr. Frederick Fasehun, was a powerful figure in NADECO, the vehicle of choice for our nation’s democratic struggle, both domestically and internationally. In this Fourth Republic, Tinubu is the first Nigerian president to come from the trenches of the fight against military rule, just like Nelson Mandela,” he continued.
