As Muslims across Lagos prepare to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on residents to prioritize proper waste disposal during and after the festivities to protect public health and maintain a clean environment.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, LAWMA’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the agency has put robust measures in place to manage the anticipated surge in waste generation during the Sallah celebrations.

“Eid-el-Kabir is a time of celebration and communal bonding. However, we must not forget our civic duties—especially regarding the environment,” Dr. Gbadegesin said.

He stressed the need for proper handling of animal waste, food remnants, and packaging materials, noting that LAWMA’s operational and enforcement teams would be actively deployed across the state to ensure compliance with environmental standards throughout the holiday period.

While commending Lagosians for their support in past festive seasons, he warned against recurring incidents of indiscriminate dumping in public spaces such as road medians, drainage systems, and open plots, describing such acts as hazardous to public health.

“These violations pose serious risks and will not go unpunished,” he warned.

Dr. Gbadegesin further urged butchers and livestock dealers to patronize only approved abattoirs, pointing out that illegal slaughter points endanger both human health and the environment.

He also encouraged residents to use covered waste bins, bag their refuse properly, and ensure timely evacuation through their designated Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.

As part of its ongoing environmental efforts, LAWMA is also marking World Environment Day 2025, themed “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution.” The agency has rolled out a series of awareness campaigns and community clean-ups in partnership with schools, NGOs, and local groups.

“Restoring the environment begins with personal choices and collective action,” Dr. Gbadegesin noted.

He called on market leaders, religious figures, and community groups to champion environmentally responsible practices such as gutter cleaning, recycling, and discouraging street dumping.

LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos, emphasizing that environmental health is a shared obligation.

Residents are advised to report waste-related issues and inquiries via LAWMA’s official communication channels.
