El-Rufai Predicts APC’s Possible Exit in 2027

According to Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to leave in 2027.

El-Rufai reportedly stated that political power in Nigeria is still up for debate during his speech at the 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue, which had as its theme “Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: What Is Working and What Is Not.”
El-Rufai pointed out that the APC will not hold power indefinitely, just as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did for 16 years before losing it.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory claims that Nigeria’s democratic experience is unique on the African continent since, in contrast to several other nations with dominant-party systems, no single party holds permanent power.

“Nigeria does not have a permanent ruling party, and that is an accomplishment,” he declared.

“The PDP ruled for sixteen years. The APC won’t hold power indefinitely. The APC is probably going to disappear by 2027.

Thus, power is still up for debate. This sets Nigeria apart from other major party systems on the continent.

El-Rufai noted that Nigerian political parties are still weak and “personality-driven and transactional,” emphasizing that political competition has not yet resulted in good administration or accountability.

“Competition has not yet developed into accountability and good governance,” he stated.

Speaking from Brussels, Belgium, where he claimed to be recuperating from illness, the former governor expressed regret for missing the ceremony in Abuja.
