EndSARS: No Massacre Occurred at Lekki Tollgate, Says Lai Mohammed

Lai Mohammed, a former minister of information in the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, has maintained that there was no massacre at the Lekki Tollgate on October 20, 2020, during the large-scale demonstration against the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

He claimed that people lost their lives during the protest but not at the Lekki Tollgate in an interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday.

“Our stance on EndSARS was very clear,” he stated. The Federal Government never denied that there were casualties during EndSARS.

“We admitted them and reported them. Thirty-seven police officers were killed. During EndSARS, six soldiers died.

We acknowledged this, but no one talks about it. We list the number of people who died in Kano, Abuja, and other places, but we have stated—and continue to maintain—that there were no massacres at the Lekki tollgate.

And I believe this is the point at which I differed with CNN. CNN was not present at the fortunate tollgate. CNN’s piece was written using inadequately sourced material.

The Lekki Tollgate incident “is the only massacre in the whole of the world where there are no bodies,” according to Lai Mohammed.

He revealed that the incident was the subject of an entire chapter in his book, “Headlines And Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined An Administration.”

Additionally, he stated that the book aims to dispel false views in public.

“In the entire globe, this is the only slaughter in which no bodies are found. “I challenge anyone to come and tell me now that “my son or my daughter was at the tollgate, he didn’t come back home,” he said. “People killed in Alimoso, people perished everywhere, but there was no massacre at the tollgate.”
