Enugu Labour Party Defies Abure, Supports Obi’s Alliance with ADC

The Labour Party (LP) chapter in Enugu has formally stated its support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition alliance.

A section led by Julius Abure threatened to censure Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, for his involvement in the new opposition coalition, which sparked internal conflicts within the LP.

Kingsley Ugwu, the LP’s interim state chairman, signed a letter dated July 3, 2025, in which the party stated that it is joining the coalition in order to create a better Nigeria.

“With our principal, Peter Obi, we are happy to announce that Labour Party Enugu State has formally joined the coalition to support the effort to create a better Nigeria,” the letter said.

The party’s desire for cooperation and togetherness in the service of national progress is the foundation of the decision to join the coalition, according to Ugwu.

“As part of this endeavor, we are thrilled to declare that we can now start promoting the ADC agenda throughout all 160 wards in Enugu State,” he continued.

According to him, the goal of the coalition is to encourage community involvement on matters that are important to the people and to advance a common vision for a better Nigeria.

“We think we can create a better future for our state and our country by cooperating,” Ugwu said.

Obi was seen at the introduction of ADC as the opposition coalition’s platform on Wednesday in Abuja, along with a number of other well-known Nigerian politicians.

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman John Oyegun, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, former interior minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former senate president David Mark—an interim national chairman of the ADC—were among those in attendance.
