A man, Sunday Echege, has been arrested by police operatives in Enugu State for cutting off his wife’s wrist over a suspicion of infidelity.
TheNigerian Metro learnt in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, on Tuesday, that the incident occurred in the Ibagwa-Ani community in the Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
The PPRO disclosed that the suspect claimed he acted because he suspected his wife, Chinonso Echege, of extramarital affairs.
He added that through the intervention of community members, the suspect was arrested and the machete allegedly used to perpetrate the act was retrieved.
Ndukwe said, “The Enugu State Police Command, through its operatives attached to the Okpuje Division, on January 26, 2025, arrested one Sunday Echege, a 33-year-old male resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka LGA, for severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echege.
“The arrest was made possible with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, and the machete used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who has confessed to the crime, claimed he acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.”
The PPRO noted that the suspect would be arraigned upon the conclusion of an ongoing investigation and assured the state of the Commissioner of Police’s commitment to ensuring justice.
“The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
“The Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure a thorough and timely investigation, followed by the prosecution of the suspect.
“He further urged couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resort to violent criminal acts,” Ndukwe stated.
TheNigerian Metro reported on January 13 that one 22-year-old lady identified as Iyanu Adedeji allegedly stabbed her husband, Funsho Jimoh, to death in the Gbonogun area of Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
Our correspondent learnt from a security source that the duo of Iyanu and Funsho, who were married with two children, engaged in an argument after Funsho allegedly accused Iyanu of extramarital affairs.
The argument had degenerated into a scuffle and in the process, the wife stabbed her husband, leading to his death.
