A truck fire near Karu Bridge in Abuja on Wednesday evening led to chaos, destruction, and loss of lives.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when a speeding trailer, suspected to have suffered brake failure, crashed into multiple vehicles before bursting into flames.
The impact of the explosion resulted in a massive inferno that spread rapidly, engulfing nearby vehicles and property.
An eyewitness, Kenneth, a mechanic, who spoke in pidgin English said, “The trailer was speeding—I think its brakes failed. Before we knew it, the trailer crashed into another truck and several cars. Immediately, it exploded and caught fire.
“The CNG gas it was carrying started exploding, affecting many lives and property By the time the fire service arrived, most of the vehicles had already burnt.”
Another eyewitness, Gideon Simon, said, “Yesterday, while we were outside, we saw the truck coming from the Abacha Barracks. Its brakes failed, and it started hitting vehicles along the way.
“By the time it reached this spot (points to the accident scene), the vehicles had blocked its path. Then it caught fire and started exploding because it was a CNG truck.”
Officer of Nyanya Fire Station simply identified as Samuel commended the emergency response efforts.
“My men did their best. Their response was very quick. I believe the incident happened around 8:50pm, and our response time was 8:58 pm—just two minutes before 9pm. So, I believe their response time was commendable,” he said.
According to the FCT police command, the explosion, which occurred around 7:14pm resulted in six deaths and the destruction of 14 vehicles.
The incident triggered widespread panic among residents and commuters as emergency responders worked tirelessly to contain the inferno.
