Akinsanya Olojo-Kosoko Family Appeals to Lagos Government Over Oloja of Lagos Confirmation
Members of the Akinsanya Olojo-Kosoko ruling house of the King Kosoko Royal/Oloja of Lagos Chieftaincy family have appealed to the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to intervene in the confirmation of the Oba-Elect for the Oloja of Lagos stool.
In a letter dated December 8, 2025, the family stated that the stool has remained vacant since the death of the last occupant, Chief Adebola Idris Disu Ige, on December 23, 2017. The letter was signed by Surajudeen Abiodun Olojo-Kosoko, Head of the Family, and Prince Theophitous Olojo-Kosoko, General Secretary.
The family noted that, following the conclusion of a 16-man committee report, the Akinsanya ruling house was invited to present candidates in line with tradition. Candidates were screened and interviewed by the kingmakers, with Abiola Kosoko declared elected on December 12, 2020, in accordance with the Lagos State Obas and Chiefs Law and the 1983 Registered Declaration, which remains valid.
The family lamented that despite formal communications to the state authorities on September 26, 2023, and February 20, 2024, approval for the installation has yet to be issued. They emphasized that the descendants of King Kosoko, the 10th King of Lagos and first Oloja, are entitled to the throne and urged that tradition be upheld.
The family expressed hope of being invited for dialogue to resolve the delay and address any proposed imposition contrary to the 1983 Registered Declaration.
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
This is not the first time ruling houses in Lagos have raised concerns over delays or alleged stalling of Oba-Elect installations, with previous disputes reported in Ikoyi and Eti-Osa over breaches of tradition.
