Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has praised President Muhammadu Buhari over the declaration and adoption of June 12th as the authentic Democracy Day.
Fani-Kayode who was the spokesperson of the presidential campaign for former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Vice President Nnamadi Sambo revealed this through his official Twitter account, in the early hours of yesterday.
“One of the questions that previous govt’s have to answer is why they refused to honor Chief MKO Abiola and declare June 12th as the authentic Democracy Day?
“No matter what we may feel about @MBuhari at least he found the courage to do that whilst others failed”, he tweeted.
He is, however, popular for his oppositional stand to the Buhari led administration and his recent statement came as a shock to most Nigerians who have applauded his courage for stating fact where it is necessary.
Although some Nigerians on Twitter are sceptical about his tweet and however fear a personal vendetta arising from it while others accused him of being part of the previous government who did not acknowledge MKO Abiola’s sacrifice worthy enough to declare June 12 as Democracy Day which he further reacted to.
In his defence, he tweeted, “Go and check the records. I fought for it from day one both privately and publicly. I did so before, during and afer I joined OBJ’s govt. in 2003. I have been consistent and clear but sadly the powers that be would not listen. Thanks.”
In the spirit of honouring Late Chief MKO Abiola, President Buhari renamed the international stadium popularly known as the Eagle Square to MKO Abiola Stadium.
