Italian Football Federation, Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC), has deducted 15 points from Serie A giants Juventus for lying about the club’s financial dealings.
Juventus were handed the penalty for artificially inflating players’ value for capital gains between 2020 and 2021 following the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on football.
Serie A’s financial prosecutor found the illegal financial dealings to have saved the Bianconeri an estimated sum of €90 million in player salaries.
A statement by the FIGC on Friday night announced the punishment for the Old Lady. It reads: “The Federal Court of Appeal presided over by Mario Luigi Torsello has partially accepted the appeal of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office… sanctioning Juventus with 15 penalty points to be served in the current football season.”
Several members of Juventus executives including the club’s former chairman, Andrea Agnelli, who resigned when the entire Old Lady’s board resigned in November 2022, were handed various bans from football activities as the of the punishments for the misdeeds.
The statement further added: “A series of inhibitions for 11 Juventus executives (30 months for [Fabio] Paratici, 24 months for [Andrea] Agnelli and [Maurizio] Arrivabene, 16 months for [Federico] Cherubini, eight months for [Pavel] Nedved, [Paolo] Garimberti, [Enrico] Vellano, [Assia] Venier, [Caitlin] Hughes, [Daniela] Marilungo and [Francesco] Roncaglio).”
The 15 point deduction after the Serie A “Plusvalenze Gate” on capital gain violations will see Juventus drop down from 3rd place to tied for 10th on points with Bologna and Empoli, who are on 22 points respectively, with now 10 points adrift of league leader Napoli.
However, Juventus can still appeal the decisions handed down by the Italian football federation.
