In what looks to be a retaliation attack, suspected Lakurawa terrorists destroyed seven villages by fire and killed 13 people in Birnin Dede village in Kebbi State on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
The attackers deliberately targeted the communities around Birnin Dede, which are all located inside the Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, a local resident named Malam Umar informed reporters.
He claimed that a coalition of regional security forces had recently killed their commander, Maigemu, and that this prompted the attack.

Only one community, which had military protection, remained intact after the attackers destroyed several others with fire. We pray to Allah to protect us from this dangerous organization,” Umar said over the phone with Vanguard.

Maigemu, a prominent terrorist leader, was slain during a security operation carried out by the Kebbi State Government, according to reports.

Governor Nasir Idris backed the operation as part of the state’s continuous efforts to reduce violent situations.

Since SP Nafiu Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, would not return calls or texts requesting more information, attempts to get a statement from the command were fruitless.
