Kenneth Okonkwo, a seasoned Nollywood actor, has charged that President Bola Tinubu usurped Rivers State’s authority by imposing a state of emergency.
Rivers State is now in a constitutional crisis as a result of the suspension of its legislative and executive branches brought on by Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency, which also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly, Okonkwo continued.
Okonkwo claims that Tinubu is attempting to establish a similar political base in Rivers State as he did in Lagos State.
However, he said that in order to prevent chaos in the oil-rich state, President Tinubu should lift the suspension in Rivers State now.
The head of the Labour Party went on to say that, given the current state of affairs, the state has only two choices: accept impunity or respect the Constitution and the people’s desire.
According to reports, Okonkwo submitted the information on Sunday through a post on his 𝕏 account.
The federal suspension of Rivers State’s legislative and executive organs has clearly resulted in a constitutional crisis, he stated.
By unlawfully declaring a fictitious state of emergency, this flagrant violation of state autonomy desecrates our federal system and jeopardizes democratic administration.
“Nigerians and all democratic defenders need to take decisive action. Rivers State must decide whether to respect the Constitution and the people’s will or give in to impunity.
“We have a choice, and the stakes are really high since the goal of the entire agenda is to eventually move Nigeria closer to Tinubu’s familitocratic government model in Lagos.
“In order to prevent chaos, it is imperative that the elected representatives of Rivers State be lifted from their suspension.”
