Governor Makinde Predicts 2027 Election as Referendum on APC Rule

Governor Seyi Makinde is not mincing words as he predicts a political reckoning for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. In a candid interview on Politics Today aired on Channels Television, the Oyo State governor framed the upcoming election as a battle between frustrated Nigerians and a government that has, in his words, “lost its way.”

“This won’t be another PDP vs APC contest,” Makinde declared. “This is about Nigerians holding the APC accountable for years of hardship, insecurity, and economic failure.”

As a key figure in the once-powerful PDP G5 coalition, Makinde’s voice carries weight in the opposition. And while he didn’t hold back in his critique of the APC, he also didn’t spare his own party. The PDP’s 2023 electoral strategy, he admitted, was deeply flawed — a northern-dominated ticket that alienated southern voters and fractured the party’s internal unity.

He recounted how he pushed for Nyesom Wike to be named Atiku Abubakar’s running mate to balance the ticket and offer a semblance of inclusivity. But entrenched interests within the PDP shut that door, ultimately paving the way for a humiliating defeat.

“We tried to prevent the fallout,” he said. “We even met in London to resolve it. But the party chose pride over pragmatism.”

Makinde’s reflections serve as a wake-up call to both the opposition and the electorate. With strategic missteps in 2015 and 2023 still fresh, he warned that unless the PDP learns from its failures, the same outcome may repeat — unless the people themselves take charge.

As the 2027 race approaches, one thing is clear: Governor Makinde is staking his political capital on a narrative that pits citizens directly against the establishment. Whether this sentiment catches fire nationwide remains to be seen — but it’s a message with the potential to reshape Nigeria’s political discourse.
