Gunmen kill eight IDPs in Benue

Gun-wielding men on Thursday, invaded Abagana community opposite the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp located along Makurdi/Laafia road in Benue State, killing about eight people including women and children.

TheNigerian News gathered that a family of six and two others were murdered in the attack which happened area around 9pm.

Recall that bandits first attacked Abagana community about two years ago, killing seven villagers.

A source in the community said another eight people were injured in the latest attack.

“On Thursday at about 2100hrs, suspected bandits invaded the Abagana community opposite the IDP camp and killed many people. Eight corpses, including women and children, have been recovered and another eight people were injured and they have been evacuated to hospital for treatment. Some of the bodies were beheaded and the heads taken away. A man with his wife and four children were all wiped out in the attack,” Punch quoted the source as saying.

Security Adviser to the governor, Lt. Col Paul Hemba, who confirmed the attack, said that the attack was unprovoked, noting that the villagers were preparing to go to bed when the assailants stormed the community.

Hemba, who gave names of those killed as Gbashaor Acho, Gbashaor Joseph, Anshe Dekera, Ancho Kpor, Eunice Gbashaor, Sewuese Gbashaor, Terlumun Ajoh, Emberga Gbashaor, and Donald Gbashaor, said that the casualty figure could rise because some persons were seriously wounded.

He added that two of those killed were IDPs, stating that the bandits stole two motorcycles belonging to the villagers.

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, also confirmed the attack.
