The embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky will today depart Nigeria through the Abuja International airport to India.

El-Zakzaky is scheduled to travel with his wife, Zeenat for the Medenta Hospital, New Delhi, India for medical treatment.

TheNigerian News reliably learnt from a source within the IMN in Kaduna that its leader was already in Abuja and waiting to be flown to India along with DSS personnel by a chartered aircraft.

Recall that a Kaduna State High court had earlier granted El-Zakzaky and his wife medical leave to undergo treatment at an Indian hospital of their choice.

The court ordered that they are released to go to the hospital and return for the continuation of their trial after their discharge from the hospital.

The state government is dissatisfied, appealed this order in another state high court revealing seven conditions upon which the applicants will be allowed to go for treatment.

Some of the conditions included that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should confirm the appointments of the defendants/applicants with the Medanta Hospital, India, and undertake all necessary diplomatic arrangements and protocols to ensure compliance with the conditions of the medical leave.

Others are that: “Each of the defendants/applicants shall undertake to return to Nigeria to continue their trial as soon as they are discharged from the hospital, and shall also be responsible for the cost of their travel, treatment and living expenses while on their medical leave.

“Each of the defendants/applicants shall produce two prominent and reliable persons as sureties, one being a first class chief/emir of national repute and the other a prominent person within Kaduna State who shall undertake to produce the defendants whenever they are needed.

The sureties are also obliged to produce evidence of landed property within Kaduna State.” It is, however, not clear if the IMN leader met the state government’s conditions before his departure or not.

Support our journalism with a contribution of any size

Nigeria's media space is swamped with falsehood, deceit and delusion. Just a handful abides by the truth. TheNigerian is one of the unique platforms helping to shape the global narrative about Nigeria and her citizens across the world. It's quite costly to maintain this brand of journalism, however.

Readers from around the world, like you, make TheNigerian's work possible. We need your support to deliver quality, investigative journalism – and to keep it open for everyone. At a time when factual, honest reporting is critical, your support is essential in protecting our editorial independence. Every contribution, however big or small, is so valuable for our future.

Our brand of professional citizens' journalism requires a contribution from members of the public, patronage and sponsorship to thrive. We rely on this financial support to be able to carry out our numerous obligations of training, running cost, production, printing and general services. We also embark on Corporate Social Responsibilities through educational programs on our TV, newspaper and blogs.
