A former governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Segun Showunmi, has said he will reform and calibrate the party if given the opportunity to be its national chairman.

He spoke at the weekend in Abeokuta, the state capital, during an interactive programme organised by the Consolidated Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun Council.

Showunmi, who is one of the contenders for the PDP national chairmanship ahead of the party’s convention in August, said the party is “long overdue for recalibration and reformation.”

He stressed that if given the mandate, he would do things differently for the party to reclaim power in future elections.

Showunmi also recommended the removal of what he termed governors’ “blanket immunity” from the constitution to pave way for the establishment of a successful state police in the country.

He said, “The principal responsibility of the government is the protection of lives and property. If the governors cannot protect their people and you are saying that you are afraid that they will kill people, then there is always an easy way out.

“You can remove murder from immunity before giving them the state police. You can remove the charge of murder from immunity. So, even if he is a governor and he kills someone that he is not supposed to kill, he can be charged with murder. You don’t have to give them blanket immunity if you are afraid of them.”
