I’m Ready to Consult and Negotiate, Says Peter Obi as He Backs Sowore’s March for Nnamdi Kanu

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has backed activist Omoyele Sowore’s demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

During a visit to LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja, on Wednesday, Obi said the arrest was unimportant.

He restated his long-held belief that the only long-term solution to separatist agitations is still dialogue rather than jail.

“I’ve always been consistent on Nnamdi Kanu’s situation,” Obi stated in response to reporters’ questions about his stance on Sowore’s call for Kanu’s release. Obi stated that his arrest was unnecessary in the first place. And I have consistently stated that I will speak with, negotiate with, and consult with anyone who is agitating. I stated it clearly, and I still do.

Noting that peaceful communication was essential to resolve such problems, Obi praised Sowore and those advocating for Kanu’s release.

“I express my gratitude to those who are genuinely attempting to express or accomplish what we have been saying for a long time. Check out my previous statements from 2020, 2022, and even 2024. The regulations should be adhered to now that it has gone to court, he continued, not only for Nnamdi Kanu but also for all agitators nationwide.

“Anyone agitating or suggesting that we have a conversation with them is perfectly acceptable. And let’s abide by the rules no matter what we do with them. Thus, I express my gratitude to the organizers and participants.

Obi’s comments follow Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, announcing intentions to lead a statewide demonstration in Abuja on October 20 under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.
