A magistrate court in Enugu has remanded Mr. Anthony Mgbe, 70, of Umuagu, Inyi, Oji-River Local Government Area, Enugu State, in prison for allegedly raping and killing a 15-year-old girl.

The police had charged him with two counts, and he was docked.

He was accused of having “unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor,” which is against Section 308 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 30, Vol. II, Enugu State, Nigeria 2004 Revised Laws, and is penalized under Section 309.

Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Law of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004, penalizes “unlawful killing by having unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor which caused her to bleed to death.”

According to information shared on the Women Aid Collective’s official social media account, WACOL, the magistrate court denied the motion for bail due to the seriousness of the offense and rescheduled the case for November 22, 2023.

Concerned community members originally brought the situation to the attention of WACOL, stating that “the man was in the habit of perpetrating violence against women/girls, but always managed to evade justice owing to the influence of his children, who silenced the victims.”

“In light of this, the deceased’s family requested legal intervention and protection from WACOL to guarantee that the offender would suffer the full brunt of the law.

“Mr. Mgbe was arrested and charged to court following a petition sent by the WACOL legal team to the Enugu State Commissioner of Police,” the statement from WACOL stated.
