INEC Summons PDP Rival Factions Amid Internal Crisis

The two opposing factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been called to a troubleshooting meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Abuja headquarters.

In order to address the ongoing leadership problem in the opposition party, representatives of the factions led by Tanimu Turaki and Abdulrahman Mohammed, who is supported by Nyesom Wike, convened for the current meeting.

Members of Tanimu Turaki’s National Working Committee (NWC), secretariat employees, and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu were among those who reportedly accompanied him.

In contrast, Mohammed was joined by members of his national caretaker committee, including Senator Sam Anyanwu, who serves as its secretary.

In the meantime, the PDP’s National Caretaker Committee, which is supported by Nyesom Wike, dissolved the leaders of 14 state chapters and declared that new congresses will be held in January 2026.

As Acting National Chairman and Acting National Secretary, respectively, Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s leadership “remains the only legitimate national structure recognised by the party,” according to the committee.

Following the committee’s meeting on Thursday night in Abuja, the Acting Publicity Secretary, Haruna Jungun, read a communiqué that stated this stance.

The news coincides with continuing disputes around the PDP governors’ endorsement of the national convention in Ibadan on November 16.

Tanimu Turaki (SAN) and other National Working Committee members were elected to four-year terms at that convention, a decision that the opposing camp did not acknowledge.
