National Chairman of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa’iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS Nigeria), Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, has called for calm and dialogue between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

Sheikh Lau emphasised the importance of preserving the long-standing historical, cultural, and economic ties that bind the two countries, including shared traditions and intermarriages.

The appeal came on the heels of the accusations by the Niger Republic Leader, Brig—General Abdoulrahmane Tchiani, against Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

General Tchiani had accused President Tinubu of allegedly supporting France in efforts to destabilise the Niger Republic, an allegation the Nigerian government has debunked while stressing its commitment to maintaining peace and cooperation with the Niger Republic.

Sheikh Lau said a high-powered committee of Islamic scholars, under his leadership, was scheduled to meet and deliberate on the best approaches to de-escalate tensions and sustain harmony between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

He said the committee would discuss practical solutions that uphold peace, unity and mutual respect.
Speaking in Abuja, Sheikh Lau reaffirmed the critical role of diplomacy, dialogue, and religious guidance in resolving disputes.

“As two neighbouring countries with shared values, culture and history, we must not allow political disagreements to tear us apart. We appealed to the leaders of both countries to embrace dialogue and find amicable solutions for lasting peace, “ Sheikh Lau said.

According to him, the committee proposed establishing a joint peace forum between traditional and religious leaders of the two countries.

Other measures planned by the Committee include strengthening economic ties and cross-border cooperation to foster unity, organising cultural exchange programmes to deepen mutual understanding and promoting regular diplomatic meetings to resolve disputes before they escalate.

While urging citizens of both countries to refrain from spreading misinformation or inflammatory statements that could worsen tensions, Sheikh Lau expressed optimism that the upcoming meeting of the committee would provide a roadmap for reconciliation and strengthen the relationship between Nigeria and the Niger Republic.
