The political landscape in Nigeria is buzzing with speculation and intrigue as campaign posters featuring former President Goodluck Jonathan have surfaced in Kano State. These posters, emblazoned with the slogan, “Team New Nigeria 2027: The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,” have sparked conversations about a potential presidential bid in the 2027 elections. They are prominently displayed at major locations such as the Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road, areas known for heavy foot and vehicular traffic.

The driving force behind this campaign is a political movement called Team New Nigeria (TNN). TNN has been gaining momentum in recent months, actively pushing for a shift in Nigeria’s governance culture. The group is not just advocating for change but is also making strategic moves to establish itself as a political party. According to its leaders, the movement has mobilized an impressive network of over 26 million registered voters and has taken substantial steps to create essential party structures, including a flag, constitution, logo, and manifesto.

 

Modibbo Yakubu Farakwai, the leader of TNN, has been vocal about the group’s goals and motivations. Speaking during a press briefing in Kano, Farakwai underscored the urgent need for transformative leadership in Nigeria.
“Nigerians are hungry for change and yearning for a new party with new faces to drive that change. They want a transformation in the culture and efficacy of governance at all levels,” he said.

This sentiment appears to resonate with a significant portion of the Nigerian populace, particularly in the northern region, where dissatisfaction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has been growing. TNN’s efforts are a direct response to what they describe as a collective yearning for a break from the status quo.

TNN has established a harmonisation committee in Kano State as part of its efforts to strengthen its foothold and expand its influence across the country. This committee is tasked with laying the groundwork for the group’s official registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a political party.

TNN’s strategy is not limited to local mobilization. The group has been actively engaging Nigerians in a nationwide dialogue, using rallies and public forums to spark conversations about the nation’s future. Farakwai explained that the group’s mission goes beyond just replacing the current government. Instead, TNN aims to redefine governance by introducing an alternative culture rooted in democratic ideals and people-centered policies.

“The TNN will provide not only an alternative government but an alternative culture of governance rooted in the ideals of democracy,” Farakwai noted during the press briefing.

Despite the group’s visible promotion of Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 elections, it remains unclear whether the former president is involved or has endorsed their activities. Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has not publicly commented on the movement or its campaign.

Efforts to reach Jonathan’s spokesperson, Okechukwu Eze, for clarification were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. However, observers recall that Jonathan has previously distanced himself from similar unsolicited actions. A notable example occurred in 2022 when supporters controversially purchased presidential nomination forms for him under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Jonathan later disassociated himself from the move, emphasizing that it was done without his approval.

The absence of Jonathan’s endorsement has not deterred TNN’s enthusiasm. The group continues to leverage his legacy and public appeal as part of its broader strategy to galvanize support for what they describe as a “new Nigeria.”

TNN’s emergence as a political force highlights the mounting dissatisfaction with President Tinubu’s leadership. Many Nigerians, particularly in the north, have expressed disappointment with the current administration’s performance. This discontent has created a fertile ground for alternative political movements like TNN to gain traction.

The posters in Kano are seen by many as a bold statement, signaling the readiness of a new generation of voters to challenge the political status quo. The north, a region that has historically played a pivotal role in determining Nigeria’s electoral outcomes, appears to be shifting its allegiance away from Tinubu’s camp.
