Kanu’s Detention: DSS Refutes Solitary Confinement Allegations

Reports that the Department of State Services (DSS) maintained Nnamdi Kanu, the jailed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in solitary confinement have been denied.
According to the DSS, Kanu is not in solitary prison despite being charged with seven counts of terrorism and treasonable felony by the Federal Government.
A DSS agent whose identity was kept secret for security reasons continued to testify as a witness before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday during the case’s resumed hearing.

The operator, known as PW-BBB, stated that “solitary confinement is not a practice of the DSS” in response to inquiries and cross-examination by Kanu’s legal team, which was headed by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

Agabi had complained that Kanu was being held in solitary confinement and voiced his concerns over his extended detention.

Although he acknowledged that he was not Kanu’s “handler,” the witness denied the allegation in his statement, telling the court that he was only an investigator.

Unfazed by the answer, Agabi went on to question whether Kanu’s ongoing arrest was lawful, claiming it amounted to “cruel and inhuman treatment.”

In response, the witness informed the judge that he was not qualified to testify to Kanu’s psychological condition because it was outside the scope of his investigation.
