Kwara Government Debunks Viral Claims of Armed Bandit Arrests in Ifelodun

The Kwara State Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the Nigerian Army arrested armed bandits in Ifelodun Local Government Area, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The clarification comes after a viral video showed suspects allegedly claiming they were supplied with weapons and a vehicle by the state government.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Commissioner for Communications Mrs. Bola Olukoju clarified that no armed bandit was arrested by the Army or any other security agency in Ifelodun or anywhere in Kwara State.

“Kwara State Government wishes to state clearly that the Nigerian Army did not arrest any armed bandit in Ifelodun Local Government Area, contrary to the misinformation being spread on social media,” the statement read.

The commissioner explained that the suspects were reportedly arrested in Auchi, Edo State, and not in Kwara, adding that investigations are ongoing. She also noted that no state government has the legal authority to arm individuals with firearms.

Further clarification revealed that the security vehicle referenced in the video was initially provided to vigilantes in Ifelodun to support local security efforts. The vigilantes have since left the area, and the vehicle has not been returned.

While investigations continue, the Kwara State Government urged enhanced inter-agency collaboration and intelligence sharing among security agencies to effectively combat banditry and violent crimes in the state.
