Labour leaders Ibeji Nwokoma, National President of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and Abubakkar Yusuf, the association’s General Secretary, have expressed grave concerns over Nigeria’s economic challenges and the deteriorating welfare of workers.

During a recent discussion, the leaders criticized the disparity between government promises and the stark reality faced by the nation’s workforce. Nwokoma pointed out that the recently approved ₦70,000 minimum wage has already lost value due to inflation and the government’s failure to pay wage arrears. Yusuf added that despite increased federal allocations, many states are yet to implement the wage, calling it an act of insensitivity toward workers.

They advocated for civil disobedience, legal pressure, and continued advocacy to push for compliance and policy reforms. Both dismissed claims of government collusion, stressing their commitment to workers’ rights as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.
