Major General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the new chief of army staff, has stated that he is prepared to lead an army that will be motivated by professionalism and discipline.

Lagbaja said this while addressing a sizable group of senior military officers and heads of various departments within the army on Friday during the handover ceremony at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

He continued by saying that under his predecessor, the Army had experienced previously unheard-of prudent resource management and acquisition of military hardware.

The 23rd Chief of Army Staff also pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor, pleading with those who are leaving the military to give the Nigerian Army the chance to draw on their expertise whenever necessary.

He said, “I pledge to lead an army that will be motivated by professionalism and discipline.”

The Boko Haram insurgency was at its height when Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya took office in 2021, but he said he is leaving it better than he met it in his speech at the event.

On May 27, 2021, after the tragic passing of Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in an aeroplane crash on May 21 along with 10 other officers and soldiers from the army, Yahaya was named army chief by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He served as the theatre commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the Northeast counterinsurgency operation, prior to being named army chief.

He urged the army to maintain its recent successes in fending off various security threats, such as terrorists, bandits, and thieves of crude oil.
