Lagos Councillor Dies Just Two Weeks After Being Sworn In

Oluwakemi Rufai passed away just two weeks after being elected as the Ward C1 Councillor in Lagos State’s Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area.

After a brief illness, Rufai, the sole female member of the council’s legislative branch, passed away early on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

Sesan Olowa, the chairman of the Ibeju-Lekki LGA, and Rasaki Kasali, the chairman of the Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), confirmed the news in separate comments, calling her passing a terrible loss for the council and the community she served.

Rufai’s death was also lamented by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos State chapter.

As a “rising star within the APC,” her leadership demonstrated “commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion,” according to party spokesman Seye Oladejo.

Despite her brief tenure in power, Oladejo observed that Rufai left a lasting effect because of her commitment to community development and adherence to the party’s ideals.

“Her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten,” he said, expressing his condolences to her family, constituents, and the Ibeju-Lekki community.
