Four electronics shops were destroyed by fire in the early hours of New Year’s Day in Ikotun, Lagos State, resulting in the loss of all goods inside the affected outlets.
The incident occurred in a commercial building located beside the GUO Transport Company terminal in Ikotun.
Items destroyed in the blaze included household appliances such as television sets, washing machines and power generators.
A resident of the area told our correspondence that neighbours quickly mobilised to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the building before the arrival of emergency responders.
According to him, residents made frantic efforts using water to contain the flames until officials of the Lagos State Fire Service arrived.
He commended the firefighters for their swift response, noting that their intervention prevented what could have been a much larger disaster.
“Without their timely action, the entire building could have been consumed by the fire, and it might have spread to nearby structures,” he said.
The cause of the fire has not been officially established, although the resident speculated that an electrical fault may have triggered the incident.
It was gathered that the affected area was cordoned off by authorities, while no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
The incident adds to a series of recent fire outbreaks in Lagos, including those at the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Lagos Island and the Arena Market in Oshodi within the past eight days.
