Major boost as Falcons thrash World Cup co-hosts, New Zealand 3-0 in friendly

The Women’s World Cup golden dream of the Super Falcons of Nigeria got a major booster on Tuesday, as they defeated the tournament’s co-hosts, New Zealand 3-0 in an international exhibition game.

The nine-time African champions who are currently ranked 42nd in the world pummeled 25th-placed New Zealand to send a message to their World Cup group opponents.

Captain Onome Ebi opened the scoring with a header 34 minutes into the game at Mardan Sports Complex, Antalya, Turkey.

Jennifer Onyi Echegini doubled Falcons’ lead from a tap-in in the 49th.

Substitute, Desire Oparanozie completed the rout in extra time.

This is the Super Falcons’ second International friendly win in three days.

The Nigerians came into Tuesday’s game from a 2-1 victory over Haiti.

Both games were preparatory matches for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled to kick off on July 20, 2023 in Auckland, New Zealand before concluding on August 20 in Sydney, Australia.

Super Falcons are drawn in Group B alongside one of the co-hosts, Australia, as well as Canada and Ireland.
