Due to claimed defamation, well-known gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has sued Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), a social media star and activist.
Chinwo claimed that VDM had broken her agreement with her previous record label, which was run by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, by making defamatory remarks about her in a number of social media posts in February.
VDM had claimed that Chinwo had broken their agreement by taking money from gigs and not paying the label.
Her attorney, Pelumi Olajengbesi, filed a lawsuit on March 3 in which Chinwo called VDM’s remarks “malicious and damaging” to her reputation.
Despite not being a party to the conflict between Chinwo and EeZee Tee, Olajengbesi contended that VDM purposefully handled the situation in a way that damaged the singer’s reputation.
He said that VDM ridiculed Chinwo and supported EeZee Tee’s side in the disagreement in a number of viral videos that went viral and attracted millions of followers.
The lawsuit states, “The Claimant avers that she has not had any relationship with the Defendant and that the Defendant was not at all involved in the matter between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee Tee in any material particular.”

“The Claimant asserts that the Defendant’s remarks in the videos he posted on his Instagram page gave the impression that he was directly involved in the disputes between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee Tee; however, these claims were not only untrue but also defamatory and detrimental to the Claimant’s reputation and public image.”
A court order ordering VDM to take down the allegedly defamatory posts from all of his social media accounts is sought in the action.
In addition, Olajengbesi asked VDM to take back the remarks, apologize unconditionally on all of his social media accounts, and publish the apologies in two nationally read publications.
The attorney is also seeking ₦100 million in punitive and aggravated damages, ₦1 billion in general damages for defamation, ₦25 million for suit costs, and 10% yearly interest on the judgment amount until it is paid in full.
Additionally, he asked VDM to run the apology for at least 14 days in a row in four national publications.
In the meantime, Chinwo had already accused EeZee Tee of using her, threatening to kill her, and spreading untrue allegations regarding the paternity of her child.
She said in a video posted to Instagram that he put her safety in risk, causing her to move from Lagos to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
