Ali Ndume, the senator for Borno South, has called on the military to send troops to protect Kirawa and other nearby areas that border the Cameroun Republic and the Gwoza local government area.
His request comes after a Boko Haram ambush on the Kirawa-Pulka route on Friday at approximately 3 p.m., which killed one member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (Name withheld) and injured numerous others, including drivers and passengers.
Ndume bemoaned the lack of a military presence in Kirawa on Saturday morning in response to the incident that occurred in his district. He also mentioned that the few tenacious hunters, vigilantes, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force are always overburdened in their efforts to protect the region.
“I received a distress call yesterday stating that some armed Boko Haram terrorists ambushed drivers and passengers along Kirawa-Pulka road, which is really disheartening,” he stated. Due to the dislodgement of Camerounian forces stationed in Kirawa last month, there was no military escort available, thus a few members of the Civilian Joint Task Force escorted the victims.
“Sadly, during the gunfight in the ambush, one of our Brave Civilian Joint Task Force members was murdered; as I speak, many casualties are still missing. During the incident, at least six vehicles were set on fire, including three trucks, a bus, and two Golf Volkswagen Saloons.
“I would want to take this opportunity to express my condolences to the families of the Civilian Joint Task Force members who have passed away. As we pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and the safety of the people who are still missing, may his soul rest in peace.
The dislodgement of Camerounian forces based in Kirawa last month has left my people living in constant terror, therefore let me also urge the military authorities to send troops, even if it is just a battalion, to protect Kirawa and its citizens.
