NIMC: 123 Million Nigerians Captured in National Identity Database

Over 123 million Nigerians have been registered in the nation’s National Identity database, according to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and each one has been assigned a unique National Identity Number (NIN).

Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director General of NIMC, announced this milestone during the 7th National Day of Identity conference in Abuja.

The Director General gave an update on the national identity project’s noteworthy advancements, pointing out that it is now reaching a wider audience both domestically and internationally, with 52% of Nigerians living overseas now registered in the database for Diaspora enrollment and 85% of prisoners in Nigeria’s correctional system enrolled.

Recent infrastructural improvements that have expedited the enrollment process are to blame for this quick expansion, according to Engineer Coker-Odusote.

With more than 200 enrollment sites around the country and overseas, the commission has expanded its network, which has resulted in a 49% decrease in the time required to obtain a NIN.

NIMC has standardized the NIN with roughly 125 government entities and organizations in addition to growing the database. The goal of this integration is to enhance governance and service delivery while fortifying the national data ecosystem.

The Director General responded to public worries regarding data security by assuring them that the NIMC database is safe and complies with international standards.

In order to increase public trust in the national digital identification project, she said, the database is the most secure in the nation.

The statement was made as Nigeria keeps developing a strong digital infrastructure, with the NIN acting as a fundamental component for social services, security, and national planning.

The continuous enrollment campaign is a result of a determined attempt to give each individual a unique, verified identification.
