According to former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, former President Goodluck Jonathan should not run for president again in 2027 because it could harm his reputation.
Oshiomhole claimed that only people who do not wish Jonathan well would encourage him to return to politics in an interview with Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics.”
Jonathan would be easily defeated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) if he were to run, according to the senator from Edo North.
How could Jonathan be a danger? Before, when the PDP was actually the PDP, we beat him,” Oshiomhole remarked.
“I believe that the only person who would force a man to run for office is his adversary if he had the PDP at its height and he lost.”
Given that his 2015 choice to concede defeat won him international acclaim, the former APC national chairman counseled Jonathan to maintain his reputation as a respected statesman.
“I would tell him to keep this status, sir, if I could give him advice. “You don’t have to govern for nine years; you governed for eight,” he remarked.
Oshiomhole went on to say that Jonathan had “managed to demonstrate that you can be relevant and at peace out of power.”
As one of the most honorable actions by a Nigerian leader, he also commended Jonathan’s well-known surrender address.
Considering how he got to that position. Oshiomhole stated, “If I were him, I would spend the rest of my life speaking and trying to find relevance, which he has already done, because he should just let those legacies be since he conceded defeat — that famous quote about the blood of a Nigerian not being worth my ambition.”
Jonathan’s political base in the south-south region has decreased since he left office, according to the former labor leader.
If he comes out very flat, we will beat him because the PDP is no longer in power in the south-south. Where will he begin, then?” he inquired.
In 2015, Jonathan, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.
APPLICATIONS FOR JONATHAN TO RETURN
According to certain rumors, Jonathan, who led Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, plans to run in the 2027 election. The former president has not said what his next political move would be.
Jonathan has also been the target of the main opposition party in the run-up to the general election.
A few PDP leaders, such as Abba Moro, the senator for Benue South, and Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi, revealed that the opposition party has been courting Jonathan to run for its presidential ticket.
Following the completion of Umaru Yar’Adua’s term, which ended on May 5, 2010, Jonathan is eligible for a second term in office after serving a single four-year term.
President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, recently stated that although Jonathan is welcome to run, Nigerians will remember his “dismal record in office.”
The presidential spokesperson went on to say that although Jonathan is free to run, the former president could have to deal with concerns regarding his eligibility because he has been sworn in twice.
